RSES Counselor Responsibilities

As the counselor at Rooster Springs Elementary School, I wear many hats and am responsible for a variety of school activities. Most importantly, my role as a professional school counselor is to help maximize student success. This is accomplished in collaboration with parents, teachers, other school personnel and community organizations.

You will find me out and about…

*greeting students each morning as they enter the doors to

Rooster Springs

*working with students who serve on our leadership teams

*helping a student in crisis

*assisting new students to make a smooth transition

*guiding a student through problem solving a situation

*meeting with a parent or collaborating with a teacher

*visiting a classroom to read a story or have a chat

*supporting teachers and staff in their effort to make each day a memorable learning experience.

In addition, I serve students directly in the following ways:

*School Counseling Curriculum (also known as guidance lessons): these lessons are unique to the current needs of our student body and can be delivered to individual classes or whole grade levels. They are designed to help students develop the skills and tools needed to succeed in school and in life. Topics often center on character development, leadership skills, goal setting and decision making, peer relations, drug and alcohol awareness and prevention, building self-esteem and self-confidence, communication skills, personal safety, social skills, among others.

*Individual Student Planning: through ongoing activities, students are assisted in establishing personal goals and developing plans for their future.

*Responsive Services: these services are designed to meet the immediate needs and concerns of students. Such needs may be transitioning to a new school; experiencing friendship problems; or dealing with grief issues related to divorce, illness or death of a loved one or pet. These services may include individual or small group settings or crisis response. I serve parents as well as students - please don’t hesitate to call me if I can be of assistance in helping you or your child.

Although I work with students individually or in small group settings, as a professional school counselor I cannot provide therapy or long-term counseling. Should you need such services, I can provide information and guidance to help you find the help needed.

I feel fortunate to be a member of the RSES community and value my role as a support to students, parents and staff. If you have a particular concern about your child I welcome the opportunity to talk with you. Please feel welcome to call me at 512-465-6203 or email me at joann.dono@dsisd.txed.net.
